St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross
Today is the feast day of St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein).
She was born in 1891 in Breslau, Poland and was the youngest child of a large Jewish family. In 1922, she was baptized in the Catholic faith and later became a Carmelite nun. When the Nazis conquered Holland, Teresa was arrested and sent to Auschwitz. Teresa died in the gas chambers in 1942. She was beatified in 1987 by Pope John Paul II and canonized in 1998. She is one of six patron saints of Europe, and the patron saint of World Youth Day.
